In the Contemporary gallery we discussed how different artists used shape and texture, as well as some artworks are made to be touched. Students crumpled sheets of paper to make interesting shapes. Then they were challenged to first draw, then paint on their paper sculptures.
While discussing Hang Up by Eva Hesse we considered the ways she utilized space, hung on the wall like a painting and reaching out into space and touching the floor like a sculpture. Students were invited to play with materials that played with 2d and 3d. Students were then asked to consider how there works should exist in space.
In the African art galleries we discussed how different cultures represent individuals importance by what they put on their body. We looked at symbols, patterns and materials used on headdresses, chest plates and arm guards. Family groups traced each others outlines and decided what was going to go onto their body.
We visited the exhibition of Bauhaus weavers and design and repetition. In the studio symbols were made using the letters of a persons name. Then symbols were made into prints using ink and acetate sheets.
Students learned about the Gutai Art Association while interpreting Golden Wings Brushing the Clouds Incarnated from Earthly Wide Star by Shiraga Kazuo. We looked at the texture and movement made by Kazuo panting with his feet while swinging from the ceiling. In the studio students experimented with different modes of applying paint to create an abstract work.
